sick sick sick

It seems that all my bragging about excellent vegan immune systems has caught up with me. Today I found myself cooped up inside with a big ol'cold. Not good. I soon decided, however, that being sick really isn't that bad at all when you get to spend the day:

reading reading reading

hanging out in bed with lil Flinnette

taking a bubble bath!

watching a DVD or two

painting a picture of my fave boy

and watching it rain rain rain

In fact, I wish I was sick every day!

Happy Birthday Siena! I can't believe my lil sisty is 14 already! I made a big ol' vegan chocolate berry cake to celebrate. So good! I might pop the recipe up tomorrow.

Frida Kahlo

I am heading to Mexico at the end of the year, and as my trip draws nearer, I am getting more and more interested in all things Mexican! I have loved Frida Kahlo forever, but am getting so excited about having the opportunity to visit her house and see the country which is so strongly represented in her work. I think that, like most people, I am just as interested in Frida Kahlo the person as I am with her actual work, so visiting her house, which has been preserved as a museum, should be such a treat!

North Melbourne Market

Today we popped down to the North Melbourne Market, where they were having a ‘special designer event’ for Spring. There were so many beautiful things! It made me extra nervous and excited for my own stall, which I will be holding there next month! Time to get busy busy sewing like a beetle!

I have lots of new pretties which need to go up on the etsy shop! Little Siena is in Queensland at the moment, so as soon as she gets back we’ll be taking lots of photos and updating the store.

Goin' Raw!

At the beginning of a new season, I often find myself making a little mental list of things I want to do or change in the new season - a new season’s resolution. At the top of my list this Spring is eating more raw food! Lately I’ve been trying to eat at least two raw meals ever day. I’m planning on making the shift to completely raw sometime soon! I think I will make certain little allowances - maybe eating non-raw food when I’m out to dinner or at someone else’s house. I’ve stocked up on some good books and am really enjoying trying out all the new recipes. Spring seems like the perfect time to make this transition, and I’m feeling rather excited!

The Harrow and the Harvest

I have been a little bit in love with Gillian Welch for quite some time. I bought her latest album – The Harrow and the Harvest - a few weeks ago, not long after it came out. While I was rather excited to have a listen, I decided to save it. I’m heading overseas at the end of the year – to America and Mexico, and I thought that would be the perfect time to hear the album for the first time. Country music must sound better in Texas, right? So I popped it away, hid it from myself, until December. But then my dad kept talking about it, saying how he must buy it, and so I ... er... wrapped it up and gave it to him for Fathers’ Day on Sunday - but not before popping it onto my own iPod. Haha. Worst daughter ever.

Anyway, we have listened to it a few times and, I must say, it’s just the most beautiful album. It’s been 8 years since their last release and I think it was well worth the wait. Like most of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ music, it’s the pretty, melancholy feel that makes me really love it.

And me oh my, I just love the artwork by John Dryer Baizley! So lovely.

Despite having loved this Winter so much, it’s always lovely when spring comes around. A lot of the blossoms have been out for a while now, which always makes me kind of anxious and sad. As soon as September 1 gets here, however, it’s so exciting to see all the pretty flowers, the birds coming out, and everything bursting into life.

There are lots of lovely flowers around our house…

and even more down in the bush!
