The Harrow and the Harvest

I have been a little bit in love with Gillian Welch for quite some time. I bought her latest album – The Harrow and the Harvest - a few weeks ago, not long after it came out. While I was rather excited to have a listen, I decided to save it. I’m heading overseas at the end of the year – to America and Mexico, and I thought that would be the perfect time to hear the album for the first time. Country music must sound better in Texas, right? So I popped it away, hid it from myself, until December. But then my dad kept talking about it, saying how he must buy it, and so I ... er... wrapped it up and gave it to him for Fathers’ Day on Sunday - but not before popping it onto my own iPod. Haha. Worst daughter ever.



Anyway, we have listened to it a few times and, I must say, it’s just the most beautiful album. It’s been 8 years since their last release and I think it was well worth the wait. Like most of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ music, it’s the pretty, melancholy feel that makes me really love it.



And me oh my, I just love the artwork by John Dryer Baizley! So lovely.

HAPPY SPRING

Despite having loved this Winter so much, it’s always lovely when spring comes around. A lot of the blossoms have been out for a while now, which always makes me kind of anxious and sad. As soon as September 1 gets here, however, it’s so exciting to see all the pretty flowers, the birds coming out, and everything bursting into life.



There are lots of lovely flowers around our house…












and even more down in the bush!

Guilty Pleasures

Recently, I have developed a terrible habit - watching bad TV just for the outfits! With all these crappy new extra channels comes a lot of re-runs of old TV shows. Despite my love for it at age 12, That 70s Show is pretty awful. But me oh my I find myself watching it all the time, just for Jackie’s snazzy outfits! I loveee all her gunne sax style dresses and skirts and am so in love with bellbottoms at the moment!

New Lovelies

Hooray, I have lots of pretty new vintage and recycled fabrics! I can't wait until the soaking/washing process is over, so I can get sewing! I love finding great pre-loved fabrics. Putting something old to use again - turning it into something special - is probably my favourite part about making dresses!



And in other news... I'm all booked in for my first market stall! I will be at the North Melbourne Market in October! It's not for a while, but I have lots of preparations to make! Exciting!

oh my gosh yum: sun-dried tomato pesto!



One thing I do miss a teeny bit about my pre-vegan days is delicious spreads and dips. Most supermarket varieties are packed with either parmesan or cream cheese. And wellll.. hommos can get a bit old. So I thought I’d have a play around at creating my own! This semi sun dried tomato pesto is delish!

Here’s what you need:

- A small tub of sun-dried tomatoes - I think mine was around 220 grams
- ¼ red capsicum
- I used 3 lil home-grown cloves of garlic, but maybe just one if it’s the bigger, supermarket variety
- 30 grams pine nuts
- A few tablespoons olive oil
- A few fresh basil leaves
- A little pepper, and maybe some salt if you’re not saltaphobic like me

First, I chopped the capsicum into medium-sized pieces and roasted it, with the garlic and a little olive oil, until it was cooked through.







Now of course you could just pop it all in the blender and it would only take a few seconds, but I rather like any excuse to use a mortar and pestle, so I went with that option. It’s also a bit more chunky too, which is nice. I put the capsicum, garlic, basil and tomatoes in and smooshed them around until they started to turn into a paste.



Then pop in the pine nuts and keep bashing, until most of them are broken up. Stir in some olive oil, until the pesto is the right consistency.



Yum!

I popped mine in a wrap with nothing but salad and avocado and it was deeelish! It’s equally good alone as a dip, or mixed through pasta.
